Libya is taking a significant new step toward strengthening pharmaceutical governance and supply chain transparency.
The Ministries of Health and Economy & Trade under the Government of National Unity have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding aimed at regulating the healthcare and pharmaceutical sector while activating a national pharmaceutical track & trace system.
The initiative focuses on:
- Establishing a national system for tracking pharmaceutical supply chains across Libya
- Enhancing drug safety and market surveillance
- Strengthening digital integration and electronic data exchange between governmental entities
- Improving visibility and control over pharmaceutical and medical supply distribution
- Supporting governance and regulatory compliance across the healthcare sector
This move aligns with Libya’s ongoing digital transformation efforts in healthcare and reflects increasing regional momentum toward pharmaceutical traceability and serialization.
Previously, Libya introduced Decision No. 379/2023, issued by the Libyan Ministry of Economy and Trade in 2023, which focuses on the implementation of GS1 standards and the application of 2D Data Matrix barcodes on pharmaceutical products and medical equipment within the Libyan market.
The latest agreement represents another important milestone toward building a more transparent, secure, and interoperable pharmaceutical ecosystem in Libya.
