Since 2025, around 12 African National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) have formally announced their intention to implement national Track & Trace systems

Two major forces are accelerating the trend:

1️⃣ 𝐖𝐇𝐎 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

Across the continent, regulators are working to reach Maturity Level 3 (ML3) under the World Health Organization Global Benchmarking Tool framework, a level that requires stronger post-market surveillance, data visibility, and supply chain control.

African countries that have achieved ML3 status include:

#Ghana

#Nigeria

#Egypt

#SouthAfrica

#Tanzania

#Rwanda

#Zimbabwe

#Senegal

#Ethiopia

Reaching ML3 is not symbolic, it demands structured traceability and stronger regulatory control mechanisms for maintaining ML3 and upgrading to ML4

2️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐢𝐭 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬

Africa represents one of the most affected regions globally.

According to a 2023 report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the human cost in sub-Saharan Africa alone is devastating:

=267,000 deaths annually linked to falsified antimalarial medicines

=169,000 deaths annually due to fake antibiotics used to treat childhood pneumonia

=In addition, WHO estimates indicate that around 42% of globally detected falsified medicines are reported in Africa.

As a result, momentum is translating into national Track & Trace strategies.

Several African countries have formally announced their roadmap toward implementation,or piloting including:

#Egypt

#Ethiopia

#Uganda

#Rwanda

#Ghana

#Nigeria

#Zimbabwe

#Gambia

#GuineaBissau

#Algeria

#SouthAFRICA

#KENYA

So, Mark your agenda as 2026 will be the starting year for implementing of the momentum of track and trace in many countries
