We often think of counterfeit drugs as a problem limited to performance enhancers or cosmetic treatments. While these remain the most seized categories globally, the reality is far more dangerous.
According to data from the Pharmaceutical Security Institute (PSI) and the WHO, the landscape of pharmaceutical fraud is shifting. Here are the categories most vulnerable to infiltration:
1- Lifestyle Drugs (Global #1): focused In Developed Markets,
ED treatments, hair loss, and increasingly, weight loss injectables (like Semaglutide). High demand + online sales = High risk.
2- Antibiotics & Anti-malarials: focused In Developing Markets,Africa, Southeast Asia, and parts of Latin America The leading category in developing regions. Falsified antibiotics contribute significantly to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and treatment failure.
3- Psychotropics & Painkillers: Opioids and sedatives are heavily targeted due to addiction rates and street value.
4- High-Cost Life-Saving Meds: We are seeing an alarming rise in counterfeit oncology (cancer) and cardiovascular drugs due to their high price points.
We need to move beyond basic serialization. We need robust "Track & Trace" systems, stronger regulatory enforcement, and massive public awareness campaigns to close the door on these dangerous products.
