The Mauritanian Ministry of Health has launched a comprehensive reform program to combat counterfeit medicines and strengthen pharmaceutical governance. Key measures include updating medicine registration, enhancing the national quality control laboratory, restricting medicine imports to authorized entry points, strengthening regulatory enforcement, and supporting the national procurement agency (CAMEC).
A major initiative is the development of a digital medicine registration and track & trace platform, in cooperation with the Ministry of Digital Transformation. The platform will enable end-to-end medicine traceability, monitor national stock availability to prevent shortages, and introduce GS1 standards for the first time in Mauritania. The Ministry is also investing in workforce training, stronger inspections, stricter penalties for non-compliance, and public awareness campaigns against counterfeit and smuggled medicines.
