Combating counterfeit medicines: the government launches an ambitious roadmap

In a context where counterfeit medicines pose a growing threat to public health, Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Diay announced a major initiative to guarantee the quality of pharmaceutical products in Mauritania. During his address to Parliament today, Friday, he detailed the measures outlined in an ambitious roadmap focused on the safety and traceability of medicines, medical supplies, and healthcare equipment.

The head of government explained that this strategy rests on several essential pillars. First and foremost, the systematic requirement of a certificate of origin for every imported molecule before it enters the country. This measure aims to guarantee that medicines come from reliable and certified sources.

Furthermore, the roadmap includes securing storage and transport conditions throughout the entire supply chain, from the manufacturing plant to the pharmacy or warehouse. "Each step, from the port or airport to the final distribution point, must meet strict quality standards," the Prime Minister stated.

Another key measure is the establishment of a drug tracking system using unique serial numbers, allowing each product to be traced from importation to distribution. In addition, a digital platform and a mobile application will be launched to provide healthcare professionals, inspectors, and citizens with direct access to information on the origin and quality of medicines.

This initiative marks a turning point in the fight against the proliferation of counterfeit medicines in Mauritania. It also illustrates the government's commitment to strengthening citizens' trust in the healthcare system and protecting their right to safe and effective treatments.

With this roadmap, the country aims to establish a modern and transparent pharmaceutical system, capable of meeting current health challenges while contributing to national health security.
