GS1 Egypt grants pharmacies a location identifier code for free and a 70% discount for warehouses
GS1 Egypt has announced the launch of a package of national initiatives, under the auspices of the Egyptian government and in coordination with market regulatory bodies, aimed at facilitating compliance by companies and facilities with the requirements of the pharmaceutical track and trace system, and supporting small and medium enterprises.
GS1 Egypt stated that these initiatives stem from its belief in the importance of unifying global standards across pharmaceutical supply chains, and ensuring the highest levels of transparency and efficiency , contributing to the protection of the Egyptian patient and enhancing the competitiveness of the pharmaceutical industry locally and regionally.
GS1 Egypt clarified that its initiatives include special facilitations for obtaining the Global Location Number (GLN) the global code that precisely identifies a facility's identity and geographic location , which has been issued free of charge and permanently to all private and public pharmacies, alongside a 70% discount for licensed warehouses and storage facilities registered with the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), helping reduce the burden on facilities and accelerating their integration into the track and trace system.
The initiatives also cover obtaining the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) , the global code used to uniquely and non-replicably identify a pharmaceutical product , with a 50% discount granted to toll manufacturing companies licensed by EDA.
GS1 Egypt added that recent days saw the launch of a national training initiative targeting companies addressed by Ministerial Decree No. 804 of 2025 on pharmaceutical track and trace. More than 500 companies from various market segments have already been trained, including manufacturers, importers, distributors, and toll manufacturers.
GS1 Egypt reaffirmed its full commitment to continuing cooperation with government bodies and all parties within the pharmaceutical ecosystem, providing the necessary technical and advisory support to ensure the smooth and effective implementation of the track and trace system , achieving the state's objectives of building a safe and sustainable pharmaceutical system, and reinforcing Egypt's position as a regional hub for the pharmaceutical industry.
